Abstract
As a part of the integrated approach to examine environmental, health and welfare impacts of aviation emissions, this project under PARTNER, along with those of emission measurements, health impact and climate change analyses, is designed to provide scientific inputs based on the latest state of science for the development and improvement of FAA tools (such as APMT) for cost-benefit valuation.
This project is intended to provide an assessment of air quality impacts due to aviation emissions using a state-of-the-art comprehensive one-atmosphere air quality modeling system, i.e. the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model that treats gas-phase chemistry, particulate matter (PM) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). To accurately represent the distribution of aviation emissions in air quality modeling, we will modify the Sparse Matrix Operator Kernel Emissions (SMOKE) modeling system which prepares emission inputs to CMAQ by including three dimensional hourly direct emissions of CO, NOx, THC, HAPs, SOx, and PM2.5 processed by a research version of the FAA Emissions and Dispersion Modeling System (EDMS). We will perform annual base and sensitivity CMAQ simulations at multi grid resolutions focused on few U.S. airports, and assess the contributions from commercial aircraft emissions to ambient air quality relative to the background air. We will then perform explorative research to combine CMAQ outputs with local-scale dispersion modeling to provide fine-scale details in the vicinity of the airports.
