Location

The AEFS is based in Manteo, North Carolina, the county seat of Dare County on Roanoke Island, and site of the first attempt at English settlement in North America. To the east and west of Roanoke Island are two small sounds, Roanoke and Croatan, while to its north and south loom the two largest sounds in North Carolina, Albemarle and Pamlico.

AEFS students have the opportunity to explore much of eastern North Carolina including the Outer Banks, Ocracoke Island, Lake Mattamuskeet, the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, and the Great Dismal Swamp just across the border in Virginia. The Carolina Photojournalism Workshop, rich multimedia experiences put together by photojournalism students, featured some of the research at the Albemarle Ecological Field Site from 2004.

Timing

Currently, the AEFS is offered during the fall semesters.
