Student Awards and Scholarships

Through the generosity of a number of donors, the Institute for the Environment offers awards and scholarships to UNC undergraduates. Many of them help students attend one of the program's field sites, and almost all of them support students who are willing to do internships or other community service activities.

Award Types

  1. Awards are one-time payments awarded to a student on the basis of need, merit, or some other basis such as attendance at a specific Institute field site. Students who win awards are notified by April 30. Some awards require you to be admitted to a specific field site in order to be eligible to apply. The deadline to apply for field sites (through Study Abroad) is mid-February. Unless otherwise noted, awards are paid to each winning student's account with the University Cashiers Office. The balance remaining, if any, after expenses in the award semester have been cleared will be issued to the winning student by the Cashiers Office (not by the CEP) as a check.
  2. Scholarships are continuing support for undergraduate students at Carolina, generally requiring you to maintain good academic standing with the University and, in the case of those given to, and administered in part by the Institute for the Environment, generally requiring applicants to show interest in environmental majors or meet similar requirements. They may requre you to complete an application form. You can obtain additional information about scholarships at Carolina from the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid, (919) 962-4168.
  3. Fellowships are one-time or continuing support for graduate students at Carolina. In the case of those given to, and administered in whole or in part by the Institute, generally open only to graduate students at UNC in certain areas of advanced environmental study. They may require you to complete an application form and/or further application activites. You can obtain additional information about support for graduate students at Carolina from the Graduate School.

Robert Alonzo Winston Scholarship$100001N/AN/A Application
The Robert Alonzo Winston Conservation Scholarship is awarded to one entering undergraduate first-year student at UNC every year. You must be a high school senior, and you must be admitted to UNC to apply for the scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to students who are interested in conservation and who, therefore, intend to major in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Geography, or Public Policy. The online application includes an essay asking why you are interested in conservation and how you expect study at Carolina will advance that interest. The Scholarship is $2,500 per year for four years, and requires you maintain good academic standing at UNC. It is withdrawn if you do not maintain good academic standing. It ends after four years whether or not you graduate on time. While it is not required, we encourage winners to use the money to pay for summer enrichment activities such as field based coursework, internships and research. It is also recommended that award winners work with an Institute for the Environment advisor to identify suitable summer experiences. The scholarship was established by a bequest from Shirley Rabb Winston and is named in honor of late UNC graduate Robert Alonzo Winston.
