The Carbon Reduction Project (CRED)

CRed - The Community Carbon Reduction Project at UNC-Chapel Hill

The Cambridge Colleges Carbon Reduction and Sustainability Methodology

This web page will guide you through the development of a carbon dioxide inventory and a more generalized measure of the environmental footprint for your College. Your project should involve - or at least maintain contact with – several individuals or groups who are working to enhance the sustainability of the City of Cambridge, since their actions need to be coordinated for effective community action:

  1. A Carbon Reduction coordinator for the College, selected from one of the student groups at the University of Cambridge. These groups include (but are not necessarily restricted to) the Cambridge University Environmental Consulting Society, the Cambridge University Students' Union, and particularly their Ethical Affairs campaign and their Ethical and Environmental Committee. The CUSU maintains a web page of College Green Officers. This individual will be responsible for developing the carbon dioxide inventory.
  2. The Master, President, etc. of the particular College being assessed (the analogue here is Dr. Mair at Jesus College). This individual will be an important champion of your project in the College.
  3. The Head Bursar, Senior Bursar, etc. of the particular College being assessed. This person generally is responsible for making decisions and paying bills on energy use at the College, and so should be the individual with greatest access to the data you need.
  4. Martin Whiteland, the Environment Officer for the University of Cambridge, who is a valuable resource for information on energy and carbon reduction strategies. Contact with Mr. Whiteland will ensure that the carbon dioxide emissions inventory for your College meshes properly with that for the University.
  5. A representative of Cambridge City Council and specifically the staff of the Sustainability Group, who are working to coordinate climate change and other sustainability activities across organizations in Cambridge.

Having established these contacts, it is time to:
