To understand the fucntioning of a microbial ecosystem in the context of its habitat, and to identify physical and chemical controls that determine the function and composition of the microbial ecosystem, sequencing surveys of functionally and phylogenetically informative genes from pure cultures and mixed environmental samples are integrated with geochemical habitat characteristics.
