Exploring the Future of Electricity:
A FREE Professional Development Institute for Teachers

This two and ½ day teacher professional development institute will provide participants with opportunities to hear energy experts at UNC address the energy realities of the 21st century - what is in store regarding our future use of coal? natural gas? nuclear? wind? solar?  Participants will interact with curricula and receive inquiry based instructional materials aligned with the NC Standard Course of Study along with classroom supplies. Possible field trips include: UNC’s co-generation plant, the NC Botanical Garden’s new visitor center, the Harris Energy and Environment Center and UNC’s Energy Frontier Research Center. This workshop is sponsored by UNC-Chapel Hill’s Institute for the Environment with funding provided by Progress Energy.

This professional development opportunity is open to middle and high school science and technology teachers who address energy topics in their courses and who are employed by schools within Progress Energy Service areas. Workshop participants are eligible to receive Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credits, as well as Criteria III credit in the N.C. Environmental Education Certification Program - through the N.C. Office of Environmental Education.

Overnight accommodations will be provided the evenings of July 17th and 18th for participants who live more than 30 miles from UNC; participants will be reimbursed for any mileage exceeding 60 miles at the IRS standard mileage rate for a personal vehicle (carpooling is encouraged).

Complimentary breakfast is provided at hotel; light morning and afternoon refreshments provided during workshop.  Lunch will be provided on July 18th and 19th; optional dinner provided July 17th and 18th.

To successfully register for this workshop, you must:

  • Complete the online application by Friday June 15, 2012
  • Mail a $50 deposit (make check payable to Environmental Resource Program, and write "UNC Alternative Energy Workshop" in the memo line) to the address below to reserve a space at this event. This check will be held and not cashed. The check will be returned to you at the completion of the institute on July 19.

There are a limited number of spaces for this institute; therefore we encourage you to reserve your space early. Once your application and check have been received, you will receive a confirmation email. If necessary, a waiting list will be established and your check will held and returned on June 1st if we are unable to provide a space for you. The deadline for submitting the application materials and deposit is Friday June 15, 2012. Cancellations must be made by June 25, 2012, in order to receive a full refund on your deposit. Your $50 deposit will be forfeited if you cancel after June 25, 2012 and would be considered a tax-deductible gift to the Environmental Resource Program.
